I showed this to a San Jose Police Lieutenant as we were about to board their helicopter for a night run. They had other streamlight rechargable lamps that had lost their charge retention and were not much good any more. He took this light out and shined it across the taxiway and onto the runway and was absolutely astounded by the amount of light and the small weight. Oh yes, the area we did this in was already lit up with 2 ea 4x1000W HID portable lights, and we were brighter all the way to the runway.
His only sad comment was at the price, SJPD would not purchase them. Lowest bidder, etc, all comes in, so if an officer wants a nice light they buy it personally.
For avionics work the one gripe was that you must tap the brightest setting first before getting the dim mode - for use in a cockpit that is backwards, but he was moving out of the helo and onto the ground with his promotion, so now it's the right way around since you want the most light first on the ground until the "night sun" comes up overhead (for radio reasons those are incandescent believe it or not - the HID ballasts cause too much RFI in a helo - even with the incandescent lamp, when the light comes on you can actually hear the turbine engine lug down from running it - pretty powerful light but alot of electricity to run it and a very very expenisve bulb)
I bought the LED executive because both of my other executive lamps from surefire had blown bulbs in them and were difficult to find. I wanted a lamp that would not fail - batteries I can deal with but blown lamps are a big problem, and expenisve too at $15-$30 ea.
Someday LEDs may take over there with the new 100W leds comming out of china, with better bulb life and much lower power usage they wouuldn't change the flight parameters of the aircraft running its searchlight. Today you can get that advantage in your hand.
Burn time - high - 3 hours, low, 54 hours continuous. Digital control switches from high to low when the batteries can no longer support the current to run the led on high.
Alot of people gripe about the price of CR123 batteries, but if you think about the price of 2 D cells vs 2 CR123's - you can buy a brand name (cant mention it here) CR123 in bulk that will last 10 years in storage with 90+percent of its capacity remaining for as litle as $1 ea in a case of 50 cells. That puts this lamp's cost to operate lower than the D cell equivalent in dollars per operational hour at the same light output. The fact it can blind someone on high shined into their eyes at night is just an added bonus.
